Hopatcong Folks Can Petition the White House

Hopatcong might find getting a petition through to the White House easier than in our town.

Hopatcong is not a timid town to voice their opinions and also get a petition started.

Upset with the 2009-2010 budget and Mayor Petillo’s casting vote that had privatized the borough's trash collection, a petition was draw to recall the mayor.  For this petition, the State law required the committee to collect at least 25 percent of the 9,571 voters registered for the 2008 election year, or 2,393 names, to schedule the election. Any voter registered in Hopatcong was eligible to sign this petition.  This was a passionate exercise by some undaunted citizens unwilling to accept the budget cuts the Mayor and Council had constructed.  Ironically, Mayor Petillo will have an uncontested run for office this coming November and there will also be only one party controlling our local government.

While getting a petition started in Hopatcong may appear to be an insurmountable challenge, the President is looking to make the petition process easier at the White House.  Americans will be able to become more engaged with President Obama and his Administration.  The White House is launching a new way for you to join with fellow Americans to petition the federal government on a range of issues. The program is called “We the People”. You can sign up for it now and be notified when it goes live here:

Maybe Hopatcong can slip some of their own petitions in and see if they get through at the national level. There might be chance here, because the President unlike our mayor has some competition running behind him.
