Plantamura, clad in two-piece jammies, said the money went to 8-year-old Santina of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Santina, of Petersburg, N.J., was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in April 2007 and relapsed in September 2010, according to a release from the charity.

"We had to do it, it was such a great idea," Plantamura said.

Cheryl Lotitto said her 3-year-old daughter, Emily, was excited for PJ day. Lotitto said she made a $20 donation.

Several West Side United Methodist Church employees also got into the act, throwing on their pajamas and making donations.

Plantamura said it's the third straight year the church has donated to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Two years ago, the church asked parents and children to toss extra change into buckets over a two-week period. Last year, children stuffed money into a large paper penny—or, specifically, into Abraham Lincoln's mouth.
