Computer Virus Scam Hits Hopatcong Man

"UGGGGGG. Come on people we know better than this!!!!!!!!!!" Lt. Thomas Kmetz wrote.

HOPATCONG, NJ— While it might seem like a scam everyone knows about, you can never be too careful when it comes to online pop-ups, something the Hopatcong Police want to remind residents about.

"UGGGGGG. Come on people we know better than this!!!!!!!!!!" Lt. Thomas Kmetz wrong on the Hopatcong Police Facebook page in a posting about a local man falling prey to a pop-up scam.

A township man clicked on a pop-up saying his computer had a virus, and to contact a representative. After speaking to someone on the phone, the man paid $199 through his checking account.

After the representative continually called to ask for more money, the man alerted his bank and closed the account. The man stopped answering calls, but the representative began calling from a new number.

The two numbers listed in the police report are 1-844-324-3678 and 48-587-7828.
