Hopatcong Police Warn Residents of Building Permit Scam

HOPATCONG, NJ — The Hopatcong Police Department is warning residents about an ongoing scam involving building permit applications.

According to police, scammers are sending professional-looking emails that appear to come from the borough and instruct residents to wire money to a specified account as payment for permits.

Officials emphasize that residents should not wire money for borough permits or other payments. The borough does not request payment by wire transfer and accepts cash or checks payable to the Borough.

Residents are urged to verify payment instructions before paying any borough-related bill. Anyone who receives a suspicious email or believes they may have fallen victim to the scam should contact the Hopatcong Police Department at 973-398-5000.
