Hopatcong to Host Concussion Helmet Fundraiser

High school football team also needs new uniforms, end-zone camera, athletic director says.

Tom Vara has a vision—every Hopatcong High School football player wearing a helmet specially designed to prevent concussions. In fact, the athletic director held a September seminar on concussion testing for athletes, parents and coaches.

So, Vara said most of the proceeds from the 2011 Chiefs Open will go toward the helmets. Looking long-term, Vara said, some of the money will also go toward new uniforms and end-zone cameras.

"The program is not hurting for money," Vara said. "But this is a fun day for all involved and a chance to raise a few bucks that can assist in meeting out team's goals a little quicker."
