Hopatcong's Prom King, Queen Amazed by Honor

Seniors D.J. Ross and Madey Chaverra says they'll keep crowns forever.

Another prom has come and gone, but not without the tradition of crowning prom king and queen.

This year, couple Madey Chaverra and D.J. Ross became royalty. Patch chatted with the pair to find out how it feels to be part of the Chiefs’ regal court.

Madey: It's really an awesome feeling. I never thought in a million years I would be prom queen. I didn't want the night to end. I'll never forget it.

D.J.: It feels great. For me, it was unexpected and such a great experience.

Were you surprised when they called your name?

Madey: I was really surprised, like I said before I never thought it would actually happen! My name never came up in my mind when I would think about prom queen.

D.J.: Yes, very surprised. We both had no idea that people would vote for us. We just wanted to have a nice night, and the crowns really helped out.

Do you think you deserved the title?

Madey: I personally never even thought about it, it's just awesome that everyone else thought I deserved it. That's what makes the whole thing so amazing. I'm so thankful for everyone that voted for us. Our senior class is amazing.

D.J.: Our relationship is worth much more than two crowns, but after I think about it, I would say yes. Only because of how close we are and how much we've been through.

Did the fact that the king was your boyfriend (or queen your girlfriend) make the honor even more special?

Madey: Yes, it did. When they called my name, all I was thinking about was that they better call D.J., too. It just made the experience whole. He's my other half, so it was just amazing.

D.J.: Absolutely, we were both very excited.

How has this victory added to your overall high school and senior year experience?

Madey: I'll never forget it. My high school experience has been great and my senior year even better. It's just a memory you can talk about 50 years from now. It made the whole night 10 times better and the night was amazing to begin with.

D.J.: It definitely made our senior year much better knowing that people like us as a couple.

What will you do with your crown?

Madey: I'm going to keep it forever. It's something I can look back on and just smile. I actually have a box where I keep all my special things in it, dating back to the eight-grade dance. So I'll probably put it in there eventually. But right now it’s on my dresser.

D.J.: Most likely keep it on a shelf to always remember my senior prom.
