Man Fled Crash Because It Was In 'Redneck Country': Sparta PD

The driver, who police say was drunk, allegedly told police he fled the crash scene because he was scared of being in "redneck country."

SPARTA, NJ — A drunk driver from Morristown told Sparta police he left the scene of a crash because he was scared of "redneck country," Sparta Lt. John Lamon said.

Michael Gormley, 48, of Morristown, is accused of leaving the scene of a drunk crash last Sunday, Lamon said. Gormley allegedly was involved in a crash at the corner of Rt. 15 and Houses Corner. Before police could arrive, Gormley drove away, Lamon said.

Police found him stopped on Demarest Road. When they asked why he drove away from the crash, Gormley allegedly told police he feared for his safety because he was in "redneck country."
