Middle School to Celebrate 'Red Ribbon Week'

Students to unite through drug prevention campaign.

Next week, will celebrate Red Ribbon Week—the nation's oldest and largest drug prevention campaign.

Red Ribbon Week started after drug traffickers killed Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Erique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985. A tradition was born—red ribbons were worn "to honor sacrifices made by others and as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs," middle school Principal Lou Benfatti wrote in a letter to parents on Oct. 17.

Here are five events happening at the middle school next week in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week:

  1. Oct. 24: Team Up Against Drugs: Wear your favorite sports team's jersey.
  2. Oct. 25: Put a Lid on Drugs: Wear your favorite hat.
  3. Oct. 26: United Against Drugs: Wear red. (The homeroom wearing the most red will win a prize.)
  4. Oct. 27: Living Drug-Free is No Sweat: Wear sweats and sneakers.
  5. Oct. 28: Friends Don't Let Friends Do Drugs: Dress up like your friend.
