Pedestrian, 70, Hit By Driver, 83: Newton Police

The pedestrian was airlifted to Morristown Medical Center for treatment.

NEWTON, NJ — A 70-year-old pedestrian was struck by an 83-year-old driver in Newton Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Howard B. Kern, 83, of Fredon, was driving on High Street near Church Street when he struck pedestrian Michael J. Bencivenga, 70. Kern stayed at the crash until police arrived, and charges are pending, police say.

Police say Bencivenga was unresponsive at the scene, and needed to be airlifted to Morristown Medical Center for treatment of injuries including head wounds. He was in critical condition Wednesday night.
