POLL: What Could Hopatcong Schools Cut?

The Hopatcong Board of Education will meet at 7:45 a.m. Thursday at the to review a 2012-2013 budget proposal—more than a week after Gov. Chris Christie announced the district than in 2011-2012.

With less money could come cuts. In fact, school board President Cliff Lundin said if the state didn't boost its aid number.

The last time Hopatcong faced such a drastic state aid reduction was in 2010, when Christie pulled $1.7 million in state aid and the borough, after the district's budget proposal was defeated, yanked another $730,000 from the budget.

  • Twenty-eight and a half job cuts: 7.5 elementary teachers; seven middle school teachers; 8.5 high school teachers and support personnel; a curriculum secretary; a school resource officer; a substance abuse counselor and a part-time custodian.
  • A slew of program cuts: freshman sports; high school field hockey, golf, marching band; and the Middle School student council and newspaper.
