Sussex County YMCA Creates Donation Drives that Hop

Volunteers and Staff Cheer along a 1950's Dance Floor

On Friday Feb 28th the YMCA made fundraising festive. They used the theme of 1950’s doo wop tunes and opened the area for a few dance numbers while encouraging people to sign up for their fundraising drive. Associate Executive Director Corey Brown and volunteer Roberta Sinatra donned on attire that was the fashion of the decade. Brown brought up an interesting factoid that the credit card was invented in 1950 and he had a 2020 wireless device that could process their credit card donation.

The Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges, which includes the Sussex County YMCA is setting a goal of raising $1,180,000 in 2020. These donations support the YMCA programs such as camps and childcare for children of all ages, and help families access these programs regardless of their ability to pay.

There is unique donation giving at the YMCA because, participating members want to provide donations to other members that are financially stretched and who rely on the programs the YMCA has to offer.

These generous members don’t need to know that the nation’s largest charity evaluator, Charity Navigator has awarded the Metro Y its top rating for nine years in a row for sound fiscal management with a commitment to accountability and transparency. They don’t need to know either that only 3 percent of the charities evaluated have this honor of nine consecutive 4-star evaluations. Generous members get to witness first-hand how their donation checks are being used.

What YMCA supporters know is that - their donations go directly to the possibility. They see the possibility that a young child diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 14 months can find a special swim program where there is fun play and recreation time coupled with welcoming community support.

The YMCA believes in developing social responsibility for the youth that enters their doors. This philosophy helps to create a caring and mindful atmosphere. Fun is still an important element too. A few members at the Y volunteer their time and help to cheer on special theme programs that provide awareness with interesting history.
