Solar Project Won't Affect School Traffic

Hopatcong school official says district should be running on solar energy by November.

The Hopatcong school district will soon see the light. The sun light, that is, and it will be providing power.

On Monday night, Director of Grounds Neil Piro gave an assessment of the project. Here's what you need to know right now about the solar project, which is projected to save the district $3 million over the next 15 years.

Almost Done Piro said the middle school roof is about "99 percent" complete and workers will soon place solar panels atop Durban Avenue. He said he hopes the district could switch from Jersey Central Power & Light to solar energy by November.

Traffic Worries? Piro said trenching needed to put power lines into the ground and run them from place to place could slow Durban Avenue parents picking up their children, but that he doesn't expect much—if any—traffic disturbances. Piro said most of that work will happen during the Columbus Day three-day weekend. If not, it'll happen after school hours or on other weekends. Piro said it could affect Durban Avenue's parking situation, but only minimally. "It will have no effect on transporting students," he said.
