Sparta Warns Residents About Scam Involving Fake Municipal Bills

SPARTA, NJ — Town officials are warning residents about an increase in scams in which cybercriminals impersonate local government to trick people into paying fraudulent bills, including fake tax bills and Board of Adjustment fees.

According to the advisory, scammers may send emails, text messages, phone calls or letters that appear official and use the town's name, logo or other government branding. Officials emphasized that the town will never demand immediate payment or request payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency.

Residents are encouraged to verify any payment request by contacting the town directly using an official phone number or website, avoid clicking links or opening attachments in unsolicited messages, and watch for warning signs such as urgent payment demands, threats of penalties and poor grammar or spelling.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted by a scam should contact the town, report the incident to local law enforcement and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
