Sparta Woman Arrested for Drunk Driving With Child in Car

Jennifer Liland "flatly refused" to do a series of Field Sobriety Tests when she was pulled over near Sparta High School, police said.

SPARTA, NJ — A Sparta woman was arrested for driving under the influence with a child in her vehicle near Sparta High School on the afternoon of Oct. 4, police said.

Police received reports of an erratic female driver operating a white Volkswagon Jetta in the area of Woodport Road. An officer at the scene saw a car that matched the description stopped at the traffic light at Woodport Road and Sparta Avenue.

Jennifer Liland, 47, was operating the vehicle.

The officer followed Liland until he saw her cross the double yellow lines, and then initiated a motor-vehicle stop.

The officer immediately suspected Liland was under the influence of alcohol. Liland then "flatly refused" to do a series of Field Sobriety Tests when the officer asked her to do so, police said. She was placed under arrest and brought to police headquarters for processing and breath testing, where she refused to provide samples of her breath.

Liland was charged with motor vehicle summonses for DWI, Refusal To Submit Samples Of Breath, Refusal To Submit To Chemical Tests-Revocation Of License, DWI On School Property Or Within 1000 Feet Of A School, Reckless Operation, Failure To Produce Valid Registration, Failure To Produce Valid Insurance Card and Failure To Maintain Lane, police said. She also faces a criminally charge for Operating A Motor Vehicle While Under The Influence With A Minor Child In The Vehicle.

A sober adult came to pick Liland up and she was eventually released with a pending court date, police said.
