The plates were supposed to be returned, police said.

SPARTA, NJ — A New York man was arrested after police discovered the license plates on his "suspicious white van" had been reported stolen, Sparta police said.
On May 31, a suspicious white van on Springbrook Trail was reported to Sparta police. A check on the license plates from New York showed they were reported stolen in N.Y.
Sparta police spoke with the owner of the van, Francisco Dicent-Reynoso, 38, from Passaic.

When Dicent-Reynoso purchased the van several months ago, the owner allowed Dicent-Reynoso to use the license plates to get home, with the understanding the plates would be returned. They were not, so the former owner reported them stolen.
Dicent-Reynoso was arrested and charged with thefr of movable property, and issued motor vehicle summonses for unregistered motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle and fictitious plates. He was released pending a court date.
