Sussex Firefighter Dies During Training Drill

Edward J. Frenenski, 31, died during a training drill on Monday night.

STANHOPE, NJ — A Stanhope firefighter died during a training drill on Monday night, the Sussex County Fire Chief's Association said.

Edward J. Frenenski, 31, was doing a car extraction training exercise at the country training academy on Monday night when he had a seizure, the U.S. Fire Administration said. Firefighters and EMS officials on scene immediately began lifesaving efforts, but on the way to the hospital, Frenenski had a heart attack.

Frenenski died after arriving to the hospital. He was an organ donor, USFA said.

He had been an active member of the Stanhope Hose Company since joining in 2005. His death is being treated as a line-of-duty death.

A number of other first responder agencies posted tributes to Fresneski online.

"We ask that your thoughts and prayers be with the family at this time and with their request for privacy. Memorial arrangements will be announced when they become available," the Sussex County Fire Chief's Association said.
