Prosecutors say Jacquil Jones, 26, is accused of gunned down Jermaine Huntley on April 10, 2014

A Farmingdale man has been indicted in the April 2014 shooting death of an Asbury Park man in broad daylight.

Jacquil Jones, 26, was indicted on a count of first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose by a Monmouth County grand jury, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced.

Jones is accused of shooting Jermaine Huntley, 28, of Asbury Park in the mid-morning of April 10 on Washington Avenue in Asbury Park, Charles Webster, spokesman for the prosecutor’s office, said.

If convicted of murder, Jones faces a minimum sentence of 30 years and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment in prison, with a period parole ineligibility of 30 years, subject to the provisions of the No Early Release Act, requiring he serve 85 percent of the sentence imposed before he is eligible for parole. If convicted of possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, he faces a maximum of 10 years in state prison, subject to a mandatory minimum of one-half of the sentence imposed or 42 months (3.5 years), whichever is greater, without parole, Webster said.

The next court proceeding will be an arraignment, which is the formal presentation of the indictment to the defendant. The arraignment will be scheduled within the next 45 days before Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Francis J. Vernoia, he said.

Huntley was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, by a friend after the shooting, and was pronounced dead there at 10:28 a.m. by Dr. Michael Night, Webster said. Neptune police initially responded to the hospital to investigate the shooting. The prosecutor’s office and the Asbury Park Police Department learned the shooting occurred in the 1200 block of Washington Avenue in Asbury Park. Investigators determined Jones was driving along Washington Avenue, came upon Huntley and fired a single gunshot which struck and ultimately killed him. Jones then fled the scene in his vehicle, Webster said.

Jones was arrested on July 2, 2014 and remains in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, Freehold Township, in lieu of $1.2 million bail, as set by Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Honora O’Brien Kilgallen.
