Georgian Court University presents Critical Concerns 2016: Women's Voices in the Jubilee Year of Mercy

Georgian Court University is hosting a series of events for their annual Critical Concerns Week.

Critical Concerns Week reflects the slate of issues addressed by the Sisters of Mercy, Georgian Court University's sponsoring organization. Each year since 2006, the McAuley Community Center at GCU has dedicated a week of scholarly study to special concerns, including women’s issues, the environment, immigration and identity, and nonviolence.

This year’s theme is Women’s Voices in the Jubilee Year of Mercy. A range of sessions are scheduled in October and November, culminating the week of November 7-11. In addition, GCU has opened many more events to the public as part of a joint humanities project with Ocean County College and the Ocean County Library. Our collaborative efforts, which launch in October, are guided by the theme, “Beyond the Classroom & Critical Concerns: Global Education for Girls.”

The guest lineup for Critical Concerns 2016 includes national and international influencers who are active on the social justice front. Among them is Jenny Nordberg, author of The Underground Girls of Kabul, who will be on the GCU campus in November. Ms. Nordberg’s work with the New York Times led to writing the book, which is also the common reading title for first-year GCU students this fall. For more information, call the GCU Office of Mission Integration at 732-987-2303.
