Why Folk, Indie & Rock Music Is Making A Comeback

Find out what's happening in Howellfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Monmouth County, New Jersey The 60’s and 70’s was a time of political and civic
turmoil. It was also a time when argumentally the world’s greatest and most influential music
was created. Music created to heal, unite, and empower communities around the world. News
paper headlines today don’t look much different than they did in the late 1960’s “Five Murdered
At Protest”... “Students and Teachers Fear For Mass Shootings”. “Black Lives Matter” is the
modern day “We Shall Overcome”.

In times of darkness and uncertainty, people are resorting to music that makes their lives
organic and pure. Music that is bringing people back to earth and making them consider the
power of unity. Consider the widespread success of folk, indie bands like The Lumineers. They
have a captivating, alluring sound that has attracted millions of fans worldwide. Lead singer,
Wesley Schultz claims, “ We want to focus on the core, not the illusion. ” The Lumineers are one
of the only bands to produce a show at the Stone Pony Summer Stage that sold out months in
advance.

The Lumineers, among other artists such as Trevor Hall and Chadwick Stokes of
Dispatch and State Radio fame are also rising to the charts, in demand across multiple age
groups. Trevor Hall, whose music is an eclectic mix of acoustic rock, reggae a nd Sanskrit
chanting has secured a massive following in the yoga, health conscious group that encourage
peace through all things. In his song, ‘Unity’, cowritten with Matisyahu, Hall sings “Whatever
path you follow push on till tomorrow, love all serve all, create no sorrow...Where there’s no
more you and me, no more they and we, just unity.” I n 2015, Trevor’s album, KALA, debuted at #2
on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart and #5 on Billboard's Folk Chart. Chadwick Stokes has been a
household name since the early 1990’s. As frontman for the legendary bands, Dispatch and State
Radio, Stokes has sold out nights at Madison Square Garden and most recently went on what he
called a “Living Room Tour”. Literally playing to a select group of fans in their living rooms at home.
Stokes says, “I wanted to get to a place where the connection was as real as possible.” Stokes is
currently writing music and a human rights activist. Chadwick Stokes and Trevor Hall will both be
featured at an upcoming festival, Rock The Farm, at Brookdale Community College on August 27th,
2016 amongst other artists, food trucks, yoga, and activities.

Folk, Indie, and Rock Music is making a comeback because it has too and the people need
it. In these difficult times, we are searching for the truth in the media luckily, music is giving us that
outlet.
