The Benefits of the Morris Habitat for Humanity ReStore to New Jersey Communities

Many people are aware of Morris Habitat for Humanity as a non-profit organization committed to building safe and affordable housing as a way of giving people a hand-up, rather than a hand-out to homeownership.  The need is critical, even here in the Morris County, New Jersey area.  What people may not be aware of is that the Morris Habitat ReStore is a big part of making those homes a reality.

What is a ReStore

A Habitat ReStore is a discount building supply outlet where shoppers will find new and gently-used items such as windows, doors, building materials, appliances, furniture, lighting, paint, decorative items and much more.  Items are donated to ReStore from both home owners and area businesses and corporations that have excess inventory.

What are the benefits to local governments?

With “tipping fees” or the cost of waste disposal exceeding $80 per ton, the thousands of tons of donations that are removed from the waste stream directly reduces the costs for local government.

Since Morris Habitat will pick up large items, there is a reduction in collection and handling costs that towns may charge residents..

To the extent that Morris Habitat salvages materials through its deconstruction program (when a homeowner ready to re-model their kitchen, donates the cabinets, countertops, etc.)  property owners can increase investment in their property and community and save money, too

What are the benefits to citizens and businesses?

Habitat for Humanity is a qualified 501C3 so that all donations will qualify for tax deductions.

Pick-ups are scheduled to match the convenience of the donor.  Drop-offs can be made during ReStore business hours.

Donating to the ReStore frees up space in preparation for a move or to purchase new items.

What are the benefits to the environment?

Contributing to the ReStore improves the environment by a reduced waste stream.  To date over 3000 tons of materials have been diverted

Donating items keeps usable building materials out of waste streams and repurposes them for a second life.

How else does the community benefit

Morris Habitat for Humanity ReStore supports the mission of Habitat for Humanity to develop affordable housing.  This allows community resources, both governmental and donor, to be leveraged toward meeting local affordable housing needs.

Further, compared to other housing models the Morris Habitat home ownership models creates homeowners and taxpayers not tenants.  Morris Habitat also requires a down payment, home ownership education, and sweat equity.  This is truly a hand up not a hand out.
