Cross Country Team Small but Powerful
What squad lacks in numbers it is making up for in enthusiasm.
Overview
With new head coach Kyla Kelly in charge of the girls cross country team at Jefferson, the Falcons are expecting to improve on their record from last season. Colleen Vaughn (Sr.) – Vaughn is a four-year letter winner and the top runner for the girls. The captain has spent the offseason going to running coaches and improving on her breathing and head movement. Her best time last season was 19:58.
Christian Tedford (Jr.) – Tedford, a second-year-starter, has put in a lot work since last year and will push to take over the No. 1 spot.
Keri Porter (Sr.) – Porter was injured most of last season with a tibia stress fracture. If she stays healthy, she will be very effective.
Kevin Uranyi (Sr.) – Uranyi ran No. 1 most of last year, losing the spot to Tedford late in the season. He will again battle Tedford for the top spot this season.
Who They'll Miss
Matt Bystrak – Now a United States Marine, Bystrak ran consistently in the number three spot.
Mike Guarino – Filling out the squad in the No. 6 or 7 spot, Guarino is attending Kings College and looking to play lacrosse in the spring.
Coach’s Take
“The majority of our point scorers are back this year so we are hoping to be competitive in a tough league. We’re expecting good things from Christian and Kevin. I’m also looking for good things from Brian Uphaus.”–Bruseo
They Said It
“I think the season is going to go really well. I think it’s going to be better than last year. Because of the way meets are run, we will have a lot more time for training and I think that will help.” –Vaughn
“I think the season is going good. Miss Kelly is working us really hard and preparing us for the season. It will be better than last year.”–Emily Scognamiglio
“I think the season will be okay. We don’t have a lot of people but I think the team is close and that will help throughout the season.”–Porter
“I think it’s going to be an awesome season. I think everyone really wants to work hard this season and the coaches really push us. I’m really motivated and looking forward to running in the low 17’s.”–Tedford
“It will be all right. We only have three (conference) meets which kind of stinks. The advantage is we can see where we place as a team in the division. We have a lot of room for improvement. Since boys and girls practice together this year, Miss Kelly will be a great attribute to the team.” –Uranyi
