Jefferson Remembers the Sept. 11 Attacks

This Wednesday Jefferson joins the rest of the nation and, likely, much of the world in remembering the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The municipality will hold a remembrance 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Jefferson Township Veterans Memorial in Eldersville.

The ceremony will feature music from vocalist Emma Gragan and bagpipe player Nila Boyd. Tom Derby from Weirton Heights will offer an opening prayer, and Eldersville United Methodist Church's Jim Sands will present a closing prayer.

The Jefferson Township Historical Society will collect donations at the event to help finance renovations for the White Church and maintainence of the memorial. Coffee and doughnuts will be served after the ceremony.

Morris County held its 9/11 commemoration last Sunday with a somber, but peaceful Remembrance Service and Candlelight Vigil that started with a procession of law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency responders who traveled from the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy to the Sept. 11 Memorial site in Parsippany.

The county’s event paid tribute to all of those who died, on Sept. 11, 2001, with a special emphasis on the 64 victims from Morris County whose names are etched in plaques that are affixed to the memorial. The names of all of the nearly 3,000 people who died that day are engraved in ruby-colored paving stones that comprise the walkway surrounding the site.

Freeholder Director Tom Mastrangelo reminded attendees of the ongoing importance of remembering what happened on one of the nation's darkest days.

“As a community, we must continue to gather each year to remember the husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, friends and neighbors who were so tragically lost that day,” said Freeholder Director Thomas Mastrangelo on Sunday.  “We come together each year to make sure those who were left behind know that the lives of their loved ones will not be forgotten.”
