📰 News we're reading

1. Carjacker Thrwarted By Mom And Son At School Pickup, Police In NJ Say (patch.com) — A Jersey City mother and her son fought off a man allegedly trying to carjack their Mercedes during school pickup on Tuers Avenue, with a teacher also struck in the struggle. Police later linked a fleeing stolen BMW to the Jersey City carjacking, leading to a pursuit and crash in Glen Ridge, where one suspect was arrested and two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

2. Appeals court rules for Jersey City cops fired for legal cannabis (1057thehawk.com) — A state appeals court has ruled that two Jersey City police officers fired after using legal cannabis off-duty should never have lost their jobs, backing a prior Civil Service order to reinstate them. The decision puts pressure on Mayor James Solomon’s new administration to move away from former Mayor Fulop’s approach while it reviews how federal gun rules intersect with New Jersey’s cannabis protections.

3. Preparing for service beyond borders (udel.edu) — A Jersey City native, University of Delaware senior James Mansfield, has earned a 2026 Boren Fellowship to spend a year in Panama City studying Spanish. The cognitive science major and Army ROTC member will deepen his language skills and later serve in the federal government, bringing Jersey City roots to an international, public-service career path.

4. Secaucus Police Blotter, May 11 (patch.com) — Secaucus police detailed a week of arrests, including drug possession, shoplifting, car theft investigations, and multiple outstanding warrants from nearby towns. One Newark man faced warrants from Secaucus, Kearny, Hoboken, and Jersey City, with Jersey City Police ultimately releasing him on his own recognizance. The blotter underscores how closely local departments across Hudson County coordinate cases.

5. At Jersey City Palestinian flag raising, keynote speaker expresses immigrant solidarity (hudsoncountyview.com) — Jersey City officials and residents recently gathered at City Hall for the fourth annual Palestinian flag raising, tying local immigrant experiences to the struggle of Palestinians. Speakers, including former Councilman Yousef Saleh and keynote Leqaa Kordia, emphasized solidarity, civil liberties, and the role of Jersey City’s Palestinian community in ongoing calls for justice and ceasefire.
