Boy, 11, Shot By Kids Playing With Gun In Jersey City

Two children were taken into custody. Adults were present during the shooting.

An 11-year-old boy was in stable condition after he was shot by two children who were playing with a gun this weekend, officials said. According to police, adults were present when the shooting happened.

The Jersey City boy was hospitalized at Hackensack University Medical Center after the 2 p.m. Sunday incident.

The two children were taken into custody after playing with a handgun that accidentally discharged in the Dales Avenue apartment, a Jersey City spokesperson said. At least one other child was also being medically treated related to the shooting.

A 15-year-old has been charged with reckless aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a handgun. A 14-year-old has been charged with obstruction of a governmental function and tampering with evidence. Both juveniles were released to their parents, with conditions.

The origin of the weapon remains under investigation, police said.

Although adults were present at the time of the incident, there was no indication what role they had in the incident and if they face charges. The boy was not identified.

Police found the weapon inside the apartment. An investigation is ongoing.
