Man Shot Self In Head As NJ Police Approached In Union City: HCPO

The man's self-inflicted wound was fatal, authorities said.

A man fatally shot himself in the head this week as police officers approached him and a female victim was nearby, according to prosecutors.

The incident happened on Wednesday at approximately 5:15 a.m. when the Union City Police Department received a 911 call for service on the 2000 block of Bergenline Avenue in Union City, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.

Upon arrival, the officers made contact with the alleged female victim. The officers were then directed by the
woman to a second-floor apartment, according to the HCPO.

At that location, the officers were confronted by a 57-year-old man from Union City who was holding a handgun. The man then delivered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the HCPO.

During this incident, a Union City Police Officer deployed his taser. In accordance with the NJ Attorney General directive governing Conducted Energy Devices, the deployment is under investigation.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is actively investigating this case with assistance from the Union City Police Department and the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
