Moody’s Downgrade Shatters Republican Fiscal Myth

Anti-establishment progressive Democrat Lisa McCormick said Moody's credit downgrade is a damning indictment of decades of Republican lies

The United States of America—once the unrivaled economic powerhouse of the world—has been stripped of its last remaining AAA credit rating, a humiliating blow to the nation’s financial standing, directly attributable to the reckless fiscal policies of Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Moody’s Ratings, the final holdout among major agencies, delivered the damning verdict Friday, downgrading U.S. debt to Aa1—a status now shared with Austria and Finland—citing "large fiscal deficits and rising interest costs" that have spiraled out of control under Republican governance.

The move follows similar downgrades by Fitch in 2023 and S&P in 2011, confirming what economists have long warned: the GOP’s claim to fiscal responsibility is a fraud perpetrated on the American people.

The timing could not be more damning. As Moody’s issued its judgment, House Republicans were scrambling to pass a $3 trillion deficit-busting tax cut—overwhelmingly benefiting the wealthy—while slashing Medicaid and food assistance for struggling families. The bill, a grotesque monument to trickle-down greed, would explode the national debt, further destabilizing an economy already buckling under the weight of Republican mismanagement.

Yet instead of accepting responsibility, the Trump camp resorted to its usual blame-shifting theatrics. A spokesman preposterously pointed the finger at a long-gone Biden administration, ignoring the $8 trillion in debt Trump himself added during his presidency, fueled by unfunded tax giveaways to billionaires and corporations. It’s a tired deflection—one that grows more absurd as the economic wreckage piles up.

The numbers do not lie. Under Republican leadership, the federal deficit has ballooned to 6.4% of GDP, with projections soaring to 9% by 2035. Interest payments now outpace even defense spending—a staggering reversal driven entirely by a party hellbent on protecting wealth at all costs while refusing to raise revenue from those who can most afford to pay.

Lisa McCormick, a progressive Democrat and relentless advocate for economic justice, minced no words in her reaction to the downgrade.

“Moody’s credit downgrade is a damning indictment of decades of Republican fraud—the lie that tax cuts for the rich somehow ‘pay for themselves’ while working families foot the bill,” McCormick said. “This is the catastrophic endgame of trickle-down economics: a nation drowning in debt, a rigged economy, and a financial reputation in tatters.”

“The GOP’s latest scheme—spearheaded by corporate puppets like New Jersey’s own Tom Kean Jr.—is nothing short of economic treason,” McCormick said. “They want to hand another $3 trillion in tax breaks to billionaires while gutting Medicaid and starving children through SNAP cuts. They’re turning America into a banana republic for oligarchs, where the wealthy loot the Treasury and the rest of us pay the price through higher interest rates, gutted public services, and a shrinking middle class.”

“Enough. It’s time to tax extreme wealth, close the loopholes that let billionaires pay lower Social Security rates than nurses and teachers, and invest in the working people who actually make this economy run. The American Dream isn’t dead—it’s been stolen,” McCormick said. “And we’re taking it back.”

McCormick, an anti-establishment voice in the progressive wing, has long championed policies such as a wealth cap, tax fairness, and massive reinvestment in the working class.

Her recommendations cannot be considered radical, and they are increasingly gaining traction in a country exhausted by rigged systems and broken promises.

McCormick has rejuvenated such historic proposals as a cap on wealth from 1934, Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign proposition to make those with income over $180,000 pay the same Social Security tax rate as everyone else, and legislation to outlaw bribery rooted in Federalist No. 69, written by Alexander Hamilton and published on March 14, 1788.

Meanwhile, the consequences of GOP recklessness are already being felt.

Higher borrowing costs are creeping into everyday life as evidenced by steeper mortgage rates, inflated car loans, and ballooning credit card bills. Small businesses are being squeezed, and wages are stagnating under the weight of a financial system tilting ever more toward plutocracy.

This is not an accident. It is sabotage.

For decades, Republicans have masqueraded as guardians of fiscal prudence while systematically dismantling the nation's economic foundation. From Reagan to Bush to Trump, the pattern is clear: explode the deficit with massive tax cuts for the rich, then scream about debt when it’s time to help the poor. It is a cynical strategy—one that has brought the country to the edge of economic ruin.

"American politics today operates as a high-stakes marketplace where influence is bought and sold, where policies carry price tags, and the voices of ordinary citizens are drowned out by the deafening roar of corporate cash," said McCormick.

Now, the charade is over. The world is watching. The verdict is in. The Republican Party has bankrupted America—not just financially, but morally.

And the American people must decide: will they demand accountability, or allow the looting of the Treasury to continue until the American Dream itself is downgraded to junk status?
