Jersey City Schools Start Next Week: See Calendar, Superintendent's Letter (patch.com) — Jersey City public school students head back to class late next week, with a new statewide ban on phones in classrooms and an updated calendar of holidays and days off. Families should note the first day off on Sept. 21 for Yom Kippur and a shortened first week of November, and can review the superintendent's welcome letter and full 2026–27 calendar online. 
2. 2nd Annual Lamar McKnight Classic to Move Forward in Jersey City (insidernj.com) — A major community football showcase honoring Lamar McKnight is still on for Saturday at Caven Point Field in Jersey City after local and state leaders scrambled to resolve last-minute issues. Three games featuring Ferris, Lincoln, Hudson Catholic, and St. Peter's Prep will bring together families and student-athletes for a day of remembrance and celebration of McKnight's impact on Jersey City youth.
3. Jersey City firefighters sue, say they are owed years' worth of OT (northjersey.com) — Jersey City firefighters have filed a class action lawsuit claiming the city and Fire Department failed to pay legally required overtime since 2019, potentially affecting many local firefighters' paychecks. Filed in Hudson County court, the case spans two mayoral administrations and seeks back wages, damages, and a jury trial, with city officials declining comment due to ongoing litigation.
4. Jersey City lists these options as Five Corners library work continues (northjersey.com) — Jersey City officials and residents are weighing costly repairs, asbestos remediation, and temporary locations as they work to reopen the Five Corners Branch Library, closed since July for serious HVAC problems. At a Sept. 3 community meeting, leaders outlined ongoing testing of existing units, possible alternate spaces like local churches and community centers, and interim services such as the Bookmobile in the library's parking lot.
5. Atlantic City's Planning Director Brian Kempf (MCRP '17) Reflects on Jersey Shore's Future (rutgers.edu) — Jersey City is flagged as one of several Hudson River communities likely to face worsening flooding as sea levels rise, according to new NOAA-based analysis. While the piece focuses on Atlantic City and the Jersey Shore, it warns that future high tides could increasingly threaten roads, infrastructure, and daily life in Jersey City unless long-term planning and climate adaptation continue to improve.
