LACEY, N.J. — Reggie Dabbs considers himself lucky to be alive. Dabbs was born to an unwed teenager with no place to go. She ended up living in a chicken coop in Tennessee.

Then his mother remembered a former teacher, Mrs. Dabbs, who told her students "if you every need anything, call me." She called. Mrs. Dabbs and her husband took care of Reggie's mother until he was born. Then they continued care for Reggie as poster parents before officially adopting him in the fourth grade.

Dabbs became a prominent public school speaker. He will present at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Lacey Township High School auditorium.
