Kids Accused Of Abusing Kitten; Lakewood Police Investigating

Lakewood police said no police report was filed in the case but authorities are following up to get answers to the allegations.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — Lakewood police are investigating allegations that a kitten was injured Wednesday by a group of children who were tossing it around and kicking it.

Lakewood Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith said police were following up on the allegations posted Wednesday to the Calling All Cats Rescue's Facebook page that claimed Lakewood students were abusing the kitten. The post said a woman who saw the alleged abuse rescued the kitten and filed a police report.

"After an extensive search of our database, we do not have any record of anyone reporting this event," Staffordsmith said. "However, additional follow up will take place today to try and confirm or dispel the allegation."

The post on the Calling All Cats Rescue Facebook page said the kitten had damage to its jaw, allegedly caused by the students tossing him around and kicking him. The post also alleged thestudents were sticking sticks up the kitten's rectum.

The post by Sara Cameron, the rescue's president, said the alleged abuse was witnessed by a woman who rescued the kitten and turned it over to the rescue.

Staffordsmith said he had been in contact with Cameron and has been following up with her.

The kitten was receiving veterinary care and was going to undergo further testing and examination on Thursday, the post said.

Cameron wrote in an update that police told her they were looking for video surveillance in the area and following up with the woman who made the original allegations.
