Lakewood Adds 50 Solar Streetlights Where Grid Couldn't Reach
New Hampshire Avenue gets a solar-powered lighting upgrade after engineers found conventional streetlights weren't an option.

LAKEWOOD, NJ - Lakewood Township is installing approximately 50 solar-powered LED streetlamps along a stretch of New Hampshire Avenue between Ridge Avenue and Route 88, officials announced.
Township crews are placing the 1,500-lumen fixtures to improve pedestrian safety and comfort in an area that lacks the electrical infrastructure needed to support conventional streetlights.
Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein and Township Engineering Manager Tony Poklasny initiated the project. Brendan Weiner of the Engineering Department developed the lighting plan and field layout, and the Department of Public Works is handling installation under the direction of Ray Helmstetter Sr., Ken Donaldson and Mike Bovasso.

Because the lights require no electrical connections, officials said the project will spare taxpayers long-term energy costs while also reducing the township's environmental footprint.
"Thanks to our great engineering and public works officials, Lakewood has enhanced the safety and quality-of-life in yet another key area in town," Lichtenstein said. "Despite the challenges of being unable to do this project the 'regular' way, our team did not give up; and, instead, worked together successfully to innovate on behalf of our residents."
