All About Art at MossRehab (Elkins Park), the annual international juried exhibition and sale of art and fine crafts by artists with disabilities, opened on May 1 and will run until July 1. This free and open to the public exhibition features the creative work of Lawrenceville’s own Leigha Cohen. Leigha’s ability to overcome mobility issues and chronic pain in order to create her own personal works of art is a very admirable accomplishment.
Leigha Cohen studied photography in New York in the 1970s at Pratt Institute, Queens College, and the New School. She is a founding member of the Toms River Artists’ Co-operative Exit 81. She also has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, a B.A. in Sociology, and a Teaching Certificate in early childhood education. A former electrical engineer at the Plasma Physics Laboratory at Princeton University, she sees an interconnection between the worlds of science and art. “Both help us understand the workings of nature and ourselves,” she explains. Cohen has mobility issues and chronic pain due to fibromyalgia, arthritis and degenerative cervical and lumbar disc disease. She also has an organic-based cognitive and memory disorder, and bipolar disorder. She considers her art an integral part of her ability to manage and explore new ways to live despite the losses her medical problems present.
The exhibition showcases works by 86 artists and fine craft artisans, 26 of whom are new this year. In addition to local artists, there are exhibitors from throughout the United States, Canada and India. Mediums include oil and watercolor painting, photography, sculpture, jewelry, needlepoint and jewelry. Prices range from $24 to $3,000, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Voices of MossRehab Aphasia Center (VOMAC).
