Make It A Safe And Fun Halloween, Says Mercer County Sheriff

Mercer County is ready for Halloween and the County Sheriff has some safety tips to share.

MERCER COUNTY, NJ — Halloween is this weekend, and while you might be ready with your costume and plans for the day, there are a few tips you can follow to have a safe celebration.

This year many children may be out trick-or-treating after several events were canceled last year due to the pandemic. The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently said that trick-or-treating should be fine this year since it's an outdoor activity that makes it easy to maintain a physical distance.

Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler has a Halloween message for county residents.

Kemler asked residents to watch out for trick-or-treaters “running from house to house” in the darkness. “Trick-or-treaters sometimes get overexcited and often forget about safety. Federal estimates are that children are much more likely to be struck by a motor vehicle on Halloween than on any other date of the year,” Kemler said. “So, consider driving five miles per hour under the speed limit in residential areas. Also, kids need to wear reflective clothing, carry a flashlight, glow stick, or a reflective bag.”

The Sheriff also reminded residents to follow social distancing rules and guidance.
