LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — In 2024, Lawrence Police will be celebrating 100 years of serving the community. And to commemorate the milestone, the Police Department has unveiled new patrol cars.

The first car hit the streets on Wednesday, and the department is expected to gradually switch to the new design in the coming months.

The new cars have a “traditional” look. They are similar to the patrol vehicles used in the past, which were black and white.

North American police cars are associated with being painted black and white, with the doors usually painted white and the rest of the body painted black. But later, police vehicles began coming from the factory painted in a single color - either white or black.

The police department’s current vehicles are around 12 years old. The new cars are designed to ensure they stand out and are more visible while driving around the community, Police Chief Chris Longo explained.

“As the newly appointed Chief of Police, one of my goals is to continue building trust, legitimacy and partnership with those who live and visit Lawrence Township. One important factor in accomplishing that goal is to present a professional, modern and accessible police department to our community,” Longo said.

“Since our police vehicles are on the road 24/7, they represent a large part of the police department’s image. The new black and white vehicle design will ensure that our police cars stand out and are more visible while driving around the community."

Longo said the new design will improve department morale, build pride and contribute to displaying the level of "exceptional" service officers provide the community.
