Rider Security Guard Sexually Assaulted, Threatened Boys: Police

It is the second round of charges for Alan Berman, who is also a captain with the Bordentown City Volunteer Fire Department.

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ — A security guard at Rider University faces a second round of child pornography charges in addition to providing children access to guns, marijuana and pornography, authorities announced.

One boy claims that another boy pointed a loaded gun at him, according to Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina and Bordentown City Police Chief Frederic Miller.

One boy also claims that 58-year-old Alan J. Berman, of Bordentown, threatened him not to tell anyone about the abuse, authorities said. The boy says Berman told him no one would believe him because of Berman’s position as a captain in Bordentown's volunteer fire department.

In September, Berman was charged with impersonating a teenage girl in order to convince a teenage boy to send him nude photos and videos of himself through an online video streaming application. He was also accused of engaging in other sexually-explicit conversations with the teenage boy. When he was initially arrested, he was placed on administrative leave.

“The Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office has made the university aware of the additional charges against Mr. Berman,” Rider spokeswoman Kristine Brown said. “He remains on administrative leave from Rider University.”

Berman is now accused of sexually assaulting three boys, giving marijuana to two of them and giving them unrestricted access e to a handgun, ammunition and magazines to five youths. This is all alleged to have happened before Berman was arrested the first time. He knew the boys, who are now between 12 and 15 years old, and their families at the time of the offenses, according to authorities.

The investigation began when a woman from Arkansas reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) that her son had been contacted online by a man who was trying to engage in inappropriate conversations, according to authorities. That man was identified as Berman, and NCMEC contacted the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

Anyone who suspects Berman of inappropriate behavior is asked to call the Prosecutor’s Office at 609-265-5035 and ask to speak with a detective in the High-Tech Crimes Unit.
