11 Livingston High School Students Named National Merit Scholarship Finalists

The academically talented students represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.

LIVINGSTON, NJ — A group of 11 seniors at Livingston High School have proved their scholastic “merit” and have been selected as semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Competition, school administrators say.

The academically talented students represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors who comprise the 16,000 semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program, They will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.

About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

About 90 percent of the semifinalists, or 15,000 students, are expected to advance to the finalist level and more than half will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the title of Merit Scholar.

In Livingston, the selected students include Alice Huang, Andrew Huang, Lisa Peng, Matthew Quan, Yana Sang, Priansh Shah, Annie Song, Tina Wu, Kevin Xiang, Mitchell Yang, and Tiffany Yu.
