ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — The National Weather Service is predicting that a storm system will bring up to 3 inches rain through the wee hours of Mother's Day morning, including wind gusts Saturday of up to 29 m.p.h.

Two weeks ago, some areas of North Jersey flooded when a storm brought nearly 2 inches of rain. Last year, the deadly Hurricane Ida brought more than 7 inches, but all in short time rather than over three days.

The most rain is expected overnight Friday into Saturday.

  • Friday night: Rain. East wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.
    New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
  • Saturday: Rain. Gusts as high as 29 mph. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
  • Saturday Night: Rain likely, mainly before 2 a.m. Wind gusts as high as 29 mph. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
