James Calaski is an active Detective Sergeant with the Glen Rock NJ Police Department where he has served for over 25 years. He served with the Glen Rock New Jersey Police Department for over twenty years, receiving numerous awards and citations. He continued his studies and received a Master of Arts degree in History at William Paterson University of New Jersey in May 2013.


As a passionate lover of history with over 25 years of law enforcement and investigative experience, Calaski brings a unique and entertaining perspective to historic lectures and examinations of a range of topics that include military, espionage, crimes and genealogy.

The Price of Treason: Benedict Arnold, Major André, and the Plot to Surrender West Point

Join us for an informative overview of Medicare, that will explain the basics of Parts A, B, C, and D, as well as Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage Plans. Speaker Fred Ciccone will discuss how these different components work together and provide essential information to help older adults make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage.

The presentation will also address an increasingly common situation: continuing to work beyond age 65. Ciccone will explain what individuals should consider when deciding whether to enroll in Medicare or remain on an employer-sponsored health plan, including the importance of knowing when to act and understanding the potential consequences of delaying enrollment.&nbsp;

He will also discuss New Jersey’s PAAD (Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled) program, which helps eligible older adults and individuals with disabilities reduce their prescription drug costs.

The second part of the presentation will focus on a new Medicare consideration specific to New Jersey. New Jersey is one of six states participating in the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services (CMS) WISeR (Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction) Model, a program designed to reduce waste and potential fraud in Medicare spending. Ciccone will explain what the program means for Medicare beneficiaries with Supplement plans, including the introduction of prior authorization requirements for certain services. He will discuss what beneficiaries should know about this developing six-year initiative and how it could affect Medicare coverage in New Jersey.

The Basics of Medicare and What NJ Residents Need to Know

Most people take prescribed medications without realizing the long, complex process behind their approval. In this presentation, Dr. Dan Gordin traces that journey from early scientific discovery to final FDA approval.
It begins with key moments in U.S. history when drug-related tragedies exposed gaps in safety oversight. The 1937 sulfanilamide disaster led to the 1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, expanding federal authority over drug safety. Later, the thalidomide tragedy of the early 1960s prompted the 1962 Kefauver–Harris Amendments, requiring manufacturers to prove both safety and effectiveness before marketing drugs.
The program also outlines the FDA’s role in protecting public health by regulating medications and other consumer products, ensuring they meet standards for quality, safety, and efficacy.
The presentation then follows the development of a new drug—from laboratory discovery through preclinical testing and multiple phases of clinical trials—to evaluate safety and effectiveness in humans. It concludes with the FDA’s rigorous review of a drug’s benefits, risks, clinical data, and manufacturing standards before approval.
Overall, the talk highlights the complex, often unseen process that brings a drug from initial discovery to a patient’s medicine cabinet.
Dr.Dan Gordin is a pharmaceutical executive with over 30 years of experience in drug development, including five years serving as a Clinical Pharmacology Reviewer at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He has a doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Medical University of South Carolina with a focus on Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics.&nbsp;&nbsp;

His expertise encompasses both early and late-phase drug development, with a primary focus on the formulation of regulatory strategy.&nbsp; He has worked across a variety of therapeutic areas, including neuroscience, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, dermatology, solid organ transplantation, women's health, and oncology.&nbsp; Currently, Dr. Gordin serves as a regulatory affairs consultant and a lecturer at Rutgers University and the Medical University of South Carolina.

The United States Constitution is one of the most influential and enduring documents in human history, serving for more than two centuries as the foundation of American government and the protector of individual liberty.

Hardly a day goes by without front-page news about governmental actions and debates over whether they are constitutional. The phrase “constitutional crisis” is now frequently used by those concerned about threats to our democracy. To fully understand these current issues, it is essential to have a basic knowledge of what the United States Constitution actually says.

This talk, in recognition of Constitution Day, observed each year on September 17 to commemorate the signing of the Constitution in 1787,&nbsp; provides a brief introduction to the study of the U.S. Constitution, highlighting its history and structure, reviewing several landmark Supreme Court cases interpreting the text, and exploring some of the fundamental rights embedded in this remarkable document.

Speaker Lou Ruprecht has been a practicing lawyer for over 60 years and presently is the senior partner of a trial firm in Westfield, NJ. He was an adjunct law professor for many years and continues to lecture at continuing legal education meetings. He has tried hundreds of jury cases, civil and criminal, and has argued appeals in every level of state and federal courts.&nbsp;

This program is being presented in partnership with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Rutgers University, which provides continuing education to individuals over 50, who are looking for an opportunity to expand their horizons, learn in an engaging environment, and meet new friends. OLLI-Rutgers offers in-person and Zoom noncredit education that is stimulating, friendly, and informal (no tests or grades).&nbsp;

This lecture is a part of the program-A Taste of OLLI , 1-hour presentations offered to libraries, senior centers and other organizations that allow participants to experience a bit of an OLLI class.

The Livingston Public Library invites the public to the premiere of the Fall 2026 Senior Happening series on Friday, September 18th when the NJ Symphony (NJS) will present “Musical Changemakers.” This string quartet features Black composers from the 18th century through today, including powerful works by Jessie Montgomery, Chevalier de Saint-Georges and Akua Dixon.
The Senior Happening is a monthly series that allows attendees (“Seniors” or otherwise) to socialize during the first part of the program (12 until 12:45 pm) by bringing a bag lunch, while enjoying desserts and coffee served by the Friends of the Library volunteers. The program and entertainment then begins at 1 pm.
Registration is required and may be done in person at the library; by telephone at (973) 992-4600; or online at www.livingstonlibrary.org. Registration begins on August 31st for Livingston and other Essex County residents.

Meadowbrook Country Day Camp

<h3>Families Can Explore Summer 2027 at the September 26 Open House</h3>
Families thinking ahead to summer 2027 are invited to visit Meadowbrook Country Day Camp during an Open House on Saturday, September 26, from 12–4 p.m. at 73 East Valley Brook Road in Long Valley.
The Open House is by appointment only. Families can reserve a time by emailing <a href="https://null" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">mason@meadowbrookdaycamp.com</a>.
During their visit, prospective camp families will have an opportunity to meet members of Meadowbrook’s leadership team, learn about the camp’s programs and philosophy, and tour its expansive wooded campus.
“There’s no substitute for coming to Meadowbrook, walking the grounds and seeing what makes the camp so special,” said owner Mason Goldberg. “We want families to get a real feel for the community their children can become part of.”
<h2>More Than a Summer Schedule</h2>
Meadowbrook Country Day Camp is an American Camp Association-accredited day camp located on a 50-acre campus in Long Valley. The camp serves children ages 3–15 and offers programming designed to help campers build confidence, independence, friendships and lifelong memories.
At the heart of the Meadowbrook experience are three priorities: family, connection and safety.
Campers become part of a caring, supportive community where they can form meaningful friendships, try new things and develop greater confidence and independence. Meadowbrook also places a strong emphasis on creating an environment where every camper feels safe, supported and included.
The camp’s TIGER core values — Teamwork, Integrity, Generosity, Enthusiasm and Respect — are incorporated throughout the summer, encouraging campers and staff to carry those lessons with them both at camp and beyond.
<h2>A Summer Filled With Possibilities</h2>
No two days at Meadowbrook are exactly alike.
Campers can spend their summers swimming in heated pools, playing sports, boating, mountain biking, taking on ropes and challenge courses, creating art, cooking, dancing, exploring nature and participating in special events and themed activities.
The variety allows children to enjoy the activities they already love while also discovering new interests and challenging themselves in new ways.
Older campers can also participate in travel programs that combine time at Meadowbrook with off-site adventures and experiences.
And while the activities are a big part of camp, the friendships and memories children create along the way are often what stay with them the longest.
<h2>Convenience for Busy Families</h2>
Meadowbrook also offers features designed to make summer easier for parents.
The camp provides door-to-door bus transportation throughout many North Jersey communities, with routes serving areas throughout Morris, Essex, Union, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Middlesex and Somerset counties.
Before-care and after-care are also available, and lunch is served daily.
Another feature appreciated by Meadowbrook families is that staff tips are included in tuition, eliminating an additional end-of-summer expense.

For Goldberg, whose own children have attended Meadowbrook, creating a successful camp experience goes far beyond filling a child’s day with activities.
