Livingston High School PARCC Parent Night To Be Held Monday
Parents will get an overview of the PARCC exams; School Board also wants guidelines for parents who refuse tests for their children.

Officials at Livingston High School will hold a PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) Parent Night on Monday.
The 7 p.m. meeting at Livingston High School is open to parents and guardians of high school students. Educators will provide parents with an overview of the exam, as well as sample test questions.
The tests are “aligned with the new, more rigorous Common Core Standards, (and) they ensure that every child is on a path to college and career readiness by measuring what students should know at each grade level,’’ according to the PARCC website.

Meanwhile, the Livingston Board of Education has asked the school superintendent to issue guidelines for parents who do not want their children to take the PARCC exams.
According to the school board’s statement, the district is required to administer the exams, and the state Department of Education is allowing local districts to determine how to address situations in which parents refuse to allow their children to take the tests.

In its statement, board said it wants school administrators to “establish a sensible, fair, and child-centered set of protocols for those parents who choose not to have their child(ren) tested.”
“The goals of these protocols should be to minimize stress for children and families, enable schools to plan appropriately for the use of space and staffing, and to ensure the smooth administration of the PARCC, which we are legally required to administer,’’ according to the statement.
Parents will be notified about those protocols by Tuesday.
