Livingston Police Share Cautionary Photo: ‘Clean Snow Off Cars’

A "concerned citizen" sent Livingston police a photo that prompted a public safety advisory.

LIVINGSTON, NJ — Clean the snow off your cars, Livingston. That was the message from the Livingston Police Department on Wednesday.

To illustrate their point, police shared a photo on social media which apparently shows a driver cruising down a local street with a roof laden with snow. The photo came with the following police advisory:

“Residents are reminded to please clean your cars of any snow. If not removed solid snow can fly off and cause a dangerous condition for cars behind yours.”

In the comments section of their post, Livingston police said that the photo was given to them by a “concerned citizen.”

  • “As a commercial driver of more the 40 years, I can say, I’ve seen many incidents caused by this problem.”
  • “Thank you too many people don't clean their cars when it's snowing or after the snow which drives me crazy especially being a new parent please try to pull these people over and give them tickets to it make them understand that safety is first.”
  • “Looks like the concerned citizen is using a cellphone while driving. Picture is taken from the driver seat.”

One person claimed to have been a victim of flying snow and ice on two separate occasions. They wrote:

“It's why it's the law to clean the car of snow/ice. I saw three really bad ones these past weeks. One guy just used his windshield wiper for his front window and drove off with rear fully covered on Mt. Pleasant westbound. Another at intersection of Livingston and McClellan, woman comes to a stop at the red light and her entire snow on roof flies forward and covers her front windshield. She had to put on emergency blinkers since she could no longer see and held up traffic as the first car at the light. Third one northbound on N. Livingston near same intersection, woman cleared entire rear window but only driver side front windshield, left everything on the roof. There was no way she could see anything on the right side if she were to make a right.”
