Livingston Student Named 'Unsung Hero': William Taylor

Livingston HS senior William Taylor has been through several prosthetic legs and surgeries, but has never let them define or deter him.

LIVINGSTON, NJ — Some of the best heroes shine from outside of the spotlight.

The Essex County School Boards Association (ECSBA) recently gave Livingston High School senior William Taylor some well-deserved kudos, presenting him with an “Unsung Hero/Heroine Student Recognition Award.”

The recognition is open to students in Essex County high schools. Honorees are students who make outstanding contributions to their schools and communities, but who may often be overlooked by traditional student recognition guidelines.

"Taylor, who was born missing the fibula in his lower leg, as well as bones in his ankle and foot, has overcome physical obstacles since birth. He has been through numerous prosthetic legs and surgeries. In her nomination comments, Pelchat noted that Taylor’s physical issues never defined or deterred him. He is active in extracurricular activities at LHS, and within the Livingston community. At LHS, Taylor is a member of the track team. In addition, he has been a class officer in student government for all four years of high school. Outside of school, he is a member of the LYCS leaders program. Through LYCS, he helps spread awareness of the dangers of drugs and alcohol and advocates for community wellness. Taylor is passionate about helping others and plans to pursue a career in occupational therapy. Taylor will attend Stockton University in the fall."

"I'm very honored to have received this award," Taylor said. "It was great to be with so many other deserving people from Essex County at the ceremony. It means a lot to me that my guidance counselor nominated me and all of the kind words that were said about me were so thoughtful."
