LIVINGSTON, NJ — It’s called Google Expeditions AR, a virtual reality teaching tool that allows student to “travel” around the world. And recently, students at Mt. Pleasant Middle School in Livingston got a chance to sample the new technology, which has yet to be released to the public.
According to a school news release, MPMS was part of a free student pilot program that gave them the opportunity to get a sneak peek of the cutting-edge technology. Through the program, students got to explore collections of 360-degree and 3D images that included historical landmarks, animals and geographical features.

“Google Expeditions AR allows computer-generated images to be superimposed on the user’s view through a cell phone. The immersive application gives teachers the ability to take students on virtual field trips, or place virtual items, such as the volcano shown in the photo above, in their classrooms for children to find, examine and study.”
According to administrators:
“At MPMS students shared the technology through the use of a “selfie stick” that allowed them to move about the media center in small groups, while looking through the screen and locating objects throughout the room. That day, a Google Expeditions associate, with the help of MPMS teachers, provided everything the students needed to experience a new dimension of education right in the comfort of their school.”
