Army Veteran, Schooley's Mountain Grandfather Dies at 79

Joe Youngman spent most of his life living in Washington Township.

Joseph Youngman watched as Washington Township transformed over the year from his longtime home on Schooley’s Mountain.

The resident of more than 50 years died suddenly last week at the age of 79, according to his obituary.

Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Youngman moved with his wife, Suzanne, from Rockaway Township to Schooley’s Mountain in 1963, where the family settled for good.

Youngman, a United States Army veteran who served in Germany as a Counter Intelligence Analyst from the time he left college in 1957 until 1960, became a guidance counselor and social studies teacher at Copeland Middle School in Rockaway Township before retiring in 1992.

Youngman belonged to the 50+ Club and the Lion’s Club in Chester and volunteered with Fosterfield’s Living Historical Farm, the Morris Museum, Centenary College, and the Mayo Performing Arts Center.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, of 51 years, a son, daughter, and four grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Association.
