Author Harriet Beecher Stowe Brought to Life at W.T. Library

Kim Hanley, of American Historical Theatre, portrays the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin at Washington Twp. Library this Monday at 7 p.m.

LONG VALLEY - This Monday, March 2nd, at 7 p.m., Washington Township Public Library will host the one-woman show "Harriet Beecher Stowe: Uncle Tom's Cabin and the Dominion of Conscience." Kim Hanley, of the American Historical Theatre, performs as Stowe. In 1852 Stowe published Uncle Tom’s Cabin, or Life Among the Lowly which helped move the conscience of the country to imperative cause of Abolitionism. Her story energized anti-slavery forces in the North, while provoking widespread anger in the pro-slavery South. Allegedly, when she met Abraham Lincoln, he said, “So you are the little woman that wrote the book that started this great war?” This program has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the NEH or NJCH. The program is free and open to the public, but registration is requested at wtpl.org or by calling the library at 908-876-3596.
