To celebrate our recently announced activities, we're inviting the community to test their knowledge in our "How Well Do You Know Washington Township's History?" contest!
As part of the nationwide America250 commemoration, the Washington Township Historical Society launched two special programs in July that invite our community to Discover, Experience, and Celebrate our Revolutionary-era heritage.
Discover the stories of our past through our new Self-Guided Walking Tour of 10 Historic Homes and Landmarks, featuring sites that stood 250 years ago. Then experience and celebrate history firsthand on Saturday, September 19, at our signature fundraising event, "Spend an Evening in 1776!"
Step back in time and imagine what German Valley may have been like when news of the Declaration of Independence reached the village. Individuals portraying early settlers will share stories of the people who lived here during the Revolutionary era. Guests will have the opportunity to mingle with the characters, ask questions, and enjoy delicious hors d'oeuvres, wine, beer, and cider while listening to authentic period music performed by a live string trio.
How to Participate in the How Well Do You Know Washington Township's History Contest
For three weeks, beginning August 10, we'll post a trivia question inspired by the rich history of the Old Union Stone Church Cemetery, the setting for our September 19 fundraiser. Answer the three weekly questions for a chance to win two complimentary tickets (a $90+ value) to "Spend an Evening in 1776!"
The contest concludes on September 7 at 11:59 PM, giving everyone plenty of time to make plans to attend this memorable evening—even if they don't win.
Visit our Facebook page, Instagram, the WTHS website – WTHSNJ.org and Long Valley’s PATCH each week in August for the three questions, submit your answer and discover fascinating information from Washington Township's Revolutionary past!
Contest rules:
1.The individual who correctly answers the most questions to all three questions will win two tickets (worth $90) to our special fundraiser on September 19 (rain date is September 29). Read details on the event here.
2.Individuals may submit answers to questions 1, 2 or 3 if they did not previously participate.
3.Answers for weekly questions will be counted once for each participant who replies with the survey tool here. (Survey Monkey).
4.If the correct answer to any question is not provided, we will accept the answer that comes the closest to the correct response. The closest to the correct answer will then be eligible for the final tally of all questions.
5.Participants may choose to visit the cemetery or the WTHS museum for reference. Hours are Wednesdays 10 a.m. to noon and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
6.Answers to all questions will be published after the contest concludes, and on or before September 7, 11:59 PM.
7.In the event of a tie, the grand prize winner will be selected by a random drawing conducted by the Washington Township Historical Society.
8.The first name of the grand prize winner will be announced on the website, along with the town they reside in.
9.WTHS officers and Board of Trustee members are ineligible.
