Central Sets Sights on County Titles in Field Hockey, Soccer

West Morris Central’s fall teams have had varied results as of late, but continue to streak toward playoff hopes and keep their respective seasons alive. Let’s take a look at what some of the teams have accomplished recently.

The girls soccer team advanced to the Morris County Tournament semifinals after narrowly defeating Pequannock 2-1 over the weekend in a contest that required two overtime periods. Both goals came from Central’s Sydney Sapir. The team now stands at 11-1-2 on the season.

Despite a painful loss in the Morris County Tournament to Montville, the volleyball team has put together a winning streak of late, beating two highly ranked teams in three days.

The first was against sister-school Mendham, which will face off against Montville in the MCT championship game. The Lady Highlanders took down Mendham in three sets on Friday, Oct. 11. The team followed up the big win by avenging its MCT loss to Montville, beating the team in straight sets Monday afternoon.

Central’s field hockey team continues its seemingly unstoppable run in 2013 as it got by Morris Knolls 2-0 in the MCT quarterfinals this weekend to improve to 13-0 on the season. Lindsay Roller and Mikayla Young each scored to get the offense going while Emily Egan contributed four saves in net for the shutout.

The Wolfpack football team got back into its stride with a big win over Mendham High School Friday night, 28-21, thanks to a strong push from the ground game. Central is now 3-2 on the season.

On the pitch, the boys soccer team improved their record to 6-5-3 with a 3-1 win over Morristown on Thursday. Drew Huyler recorded three saves in goal and Kevin Henwood, Duncan Mergen, and Dan Moylan all scored in the game.
