Rockaway Toys R Us Store Will Close By May, No Sales Yet

Sales have already started at two Babies R Us locations in Morris County.

ROCKAWAY, NJ — Following the news that Toys R Us will close all, or most, of its hundreds of U.S stores, some stores have already confirmed the beginning of the store's liquidation sales, but it's not clear when those sales will start at the Rockaway Toys R Us.

A spokesperson for Toys R Us told Patch that the details of the liquidation sale were still being finalized. An employee at the store said they were not sure when sales would start, but confirmed that the store would be closed by May.

Shoppers signed up for emails from the store can expect something in their inbox once sales start, associates at Union County locations told Patch.

Sales are already underway at the Mount Olive and East Hanover Babies R Us locations, with up to 60 percent off remaining merchandise. Gift cards can be used through April 12.

Last week, the company confirmed reports that it will be "winding down" operations and sell or close 735 U.S. stores. The announcement comes about six weeks after Toys R Us confirmed that it would close about 180 of its U.S. stores, including 11 in New Jersey.

That announcement came six months after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in federal court. Weak holiday sales are to blame for the chain's ultimate demise, according to a CNBC report.

Toys R Us is studying one proposal that could keep the business alive and keep open roughly 200 U.S. and Canadian stores open after the retailer liquidates, the company said in a press release issued Wednesday.

In addition to retail locations closing, the Mount Olive distribution center is also slated to stop operations soon. About 470 employees will lose jobs when the center closes.
