Ladies Lead Central Sports Charge to Start Fall Season

Defense playing supreme for field hockey, girls soccer teams.

The fall sports season is just a few weeks old, but West Morris Central has seen an abundance of amazing performances and at least two teams are setting the stage for a title run.

Talk about a sour taste in your mouth. After the girls field hockey team was knocked out of the 2012 semifinals to Warren Hills, all they’ve done is win in 2013. The team has notched a perfect 6-0 record with four of the victories coming by way of shutout. The ladies face off at Roxbury Thursday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. for their next challenge.

A mantra in sports has long been, “defense wins championships.” If that holds true, the girls soccer team will be hoisting a trophy before the snow begins to fall this year.

Building off its heartbreaking shootout loss to Roxbury in the North 2, Group 3 championship last year, the Wolfpack is now 5-1 after beating Mendham on Sept. 20. That one loss came at the hands of Randolph, 1-0. Amazingly, that’s the only goal the team has let up this season. All five wins came by way of shutout.

Fresh off its win against Sparta this week, the Lady Highlanders volleyball team is now 3-1 on the season in non-tournament play. The team’s only loss came at the hands of Mendham, which is undefeated at 5-0 on the season. Prior to the Sparta match, Central began the week ranked 18th overall – just one spot behind rival Mendham – in the Star-Ledger’s top 20 in the state.

The girls are searching for their second straight sectional title this year after beating Old Tappan in the finals in 2012.

After as strong start to the season with two wins, the boys soccer team is now 2-4 but making strides. The team lost to Mendham on Sept. 20 by a score of 3-1, and will next hit the pitch Wednesday at Parsippany Hills.

For the defending champion Wolfpack football team, the season has begun in eerily similar fashion to 2012. Central kicked off the season with a 21-7 win over Morris Knolls, beating the county team in week one just like it did in 2012. The team fell to Randolph in week two by a score of 21-7; it lost to Randolph at the same time of the season last year.

But 2012’s 1-1 start resulted in a title run, so the Wolfpack won’t be hitting the panic button any time soon. The team will host Roxbury Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
