Long Valley Fishing Derby Success, More Than 100 Fish Caught

Around 60 kids reeled in catches at the Washington Township Policeman's Benevolent Association-sponsored fishing derby.

LONG VALLEY, NJ — Catching bass, catfish and trout was a fun morning activity for more than 60 area youths who participated in an annual fishing derby co-organized by Washington Township Police Benevolent Association Local #301 at Kohler's Pond on Rock Road.

The three winning fish of the day were a 23-inch and 21-inch catfish, as well as an 11-inch bass, and an additional couple hundred fish were pulled out of the pond, according to the event organizer, Cpl. Derek Heymer.

"We also had four turtles that were caught," Heymer said.

Throughout the morning, attendees were given a variety of awards, including three televisions, six scooters, water guns and a variety of other toys.

The Fishing Derby has been a sponsored event for several years, but it had to take a break the last two years due to COVID-19, and Heymer was excited to bring it back this year.

"It's one of the many ways we give back to the residents in the towns we serve," Heymer said.

Attendees ranged in age from 5 to 12 years old, and event sponsors provided the kids with PBA t-shirts and bait for their hooks.

"The Fishing Derby is an event we've been organizing for quite a while. It's been a great way for the police officers in town to meet and get to know some of the youth and their families in the Washington Township and Califon Borough communities," Heymer said.
