Man's Claim Of 500-Lb. Bear Attack 'Not Supported By Evidence': Police

Police are saying evidence doesn't match story by a man who claimed to have been attacked by 500 pound bear.

POHATCONG, NJ - A man's account that he was attacked by a 500-pound bear Wednesday is not supported by evidence, Pohatcong Police said Thursday.

"After investigation, the Pohatcong Police have concluded injuries sustained to the victim WERE NOT caused by result of a bear encounter. Although the victim maintains his account as to his injuries, his statement is not supported by the physical evidence," police posted on Facebook.

Pohatcong Township Mayor James R. Kern III said the man, who has not been identified, has not been charged yet, according to nj.com.

The man had claimed to be attacked by a large black bear between 450 and 500 pounds Wednesday morning while trying to feed his cat on his porch.

The said he walked out his back door and onto the porch to feed his cat when he saw the black bear eating leftover cat food on the porch, Pohatcong Township Police Department said.

The man told police the bear swiped at him, causing injury to his arm and hand, according to information provided by police. The bear then ran from the porch and into a nearby cornfield, police said.

Police and New Jersey Fish and Wildlife were at the scene most of the searching for the bear on Wednesday.
