The 5th Annual 5K Memorial Race at West Morris Central had 280 participants walk and run to benefit the Memorial Scholarship fund at the high school on Sunday, May 22.
The event, which began in 2007 in honor of Tanner Birch and Kyleigh D'Alessio, two students who died in a car crash in 2006, included the school's Battle of the Bands winner Fisher's Mine, refreshments for participants, and an awards ceremony for top finishers.
This year's race was won in record time by Ken Goglas of Randolph, completing the course in a time of 16:23.6. A teacher in Ramapo, Goglas had run the course as a student athlete. The next two runners sprinted to the finish putting on quite a show of endurance. Second place went to 16-year-old David Reed, a student and track athlete at West Morris, with a time of 17:44.1. Third place went to Andrew Brackmann of Long Valley–a former track athlete at the school–with a time of 17:44.5.
